What about Super Systems 1? Would you recomend starting with no. 2?

I'm thinking of grabbing these, the hardcore maths involved has always put me off, that and the fact that they're thicker than War & Peace...
But I think I'll get one, even if it's just to dip into rather than reading back to back, might give me a headache though....
