Speaking of poker books... what are you all reading at the moment?.
I've always been an odd reader. Never satisfied with just one book at a time, so I usually have a few on the go at once. Currently I'm finishing up and going back through my copy of Harrington on Hold'em: Vol. 1 and have also been browsing back and forth through Gary Carson's The Complete Book of Hold'em Poker. If you've never heard of either one, definitely check them out if you're able to. Harrington's book is pretty much on the top of everyone's required reading list when it comes to poker material, but Carson's relatively unknown work is a gem in my humble opinion. After going through pretty much all a person can in regards to poker literature, I still find myself returning to Complete Hold'em Poker. I've run into many rather awkward reviews of Carson's book, but those are virtually always in reference to Gary as a person, not solely on the basis of his work. I don't know the exact details, but I guess you could say that he's a little "off", for the lack of a better term. At first that somewhat turned me off of what, like I said, turned out to be one of the best Hold'em books I've come across. As I mentioned above, I'm an avid reader all around, so if you're ever looking for someone to answer a question or have a discussion with, etc., I'm your man. Enough out of me though... |

I have just finished listening to the Phil Gordon Little Green Book which has some nice stuff in it. Also got the Phil Helmuth one but it's a bit more general so far - only a few chapters into it!
May check this one out that you mention. |

pmacFTO, I've heard good things about Phil Gordon's coloured books, but nothing at all about Hellmuth's Play Poker Like the Pros. I'm assuming that's the one you're talking about?. I mean, he does have another one or two out there, one of which I personally own and have used as bathroom material.
But yeah, the ones I mentioned, Harrington on Hold'em Vol. 1 and Gary Carson's Complete Book of Hold'em Poker are both great books in my humble opinion. One note to keep in mind though... Harrington on Hold'em Vol. 1 is about no-limit hold'em tournaments and Complete Hold'em is almost solely geared towards limit hold'em. With Harrington, I've always found that you can easily apply the information, theories, etc. to cash games as well and although Complete Hold'em uses limit games for examples, the information is in a really general sense so it can be applied to any hold'em game in my opinion. By this I mean that he talks more about the psychology behind the game, etc. Let me know what you think if you do end up checking either one of them out. I'm always down for a poker book discussion. |

I'm too sure whether you'd apply the term competition to my presence at the table, but we'll see. I'm just another average guy like the rest... |
