What is the reason for popularity of poker?

two words: Chris Moneymaker

after he won the WSOP starting from a satellite game online everyone wanted a piece of the action and their chance at big money. Granted poker was slowly on a rise before him, I believe it was the fact that an average joe like him managed to win over a million starting from almost nothing that caused the game to skyrocket.

Chris M aside (which is 100% correct), the reasons I also see are

1) Easy rules, complex play
2) Massively mentally challenging
3) The most hopless can win big sometimes
4) Everyone liked the old poker (western) movies but never really knew how to play. Being televised changed all that

5) The INTERNET! - people don't have to go to casinos and card dens, which have a seedy image.

I think the most and for most reason of poker popularity is poker has recently made the evolutionary jump from being viewed as a game to being viewed as a sport and also because increased media coverage of high-stakes poker games in United States.

I don’t think so, but I guess it's just too much to expect some people to understand that something is so popular simply because it's so much fun.

I'm gonna have to go with the Moneymaker effect.

After he won the game snowballed into what it is today.

4yrs ago now i played in a WSOP qualifier of 1800 people and made top 5 taking me to the final where at my table early on a guy called C.Moneymaker joined.

I always remember it as of course he went on to win that game while i bombed out in about 175th place.

The legend that is went on to win WSOP 2003 where i was so thrilled for him and that is where i believe it all kicked off for him and the rest of the world.

It's based on number of posts. Trust me Meeshu, I don't consider you a fish.

Did you know: There were more players finishing in the money at last years Main Event than total players the year Moneymaker won.

In my earlier post I said the Moneymaker effect, but there are other factors that go along with it.

1 - Moneymaker
2 - television coverage and the WPT
3 - the easy at which players could play online.

#3 is very important because online you're anonymous. How many of you would have started playing poker if you had to sit in a live poker room and learn the game? Maybe 1%. Why? Because when you're first starting out you make mistakes and don't want to be embarrassed or even worse, yelled at. Not to mention the fact that it's hard to find a poker room with the low limits that most online players play.
