Default The PKR Challenge

I was looking back through my rakeback sites and spotted that I had been paid $1.85 into my PKR account from one of the sites. I haven't played there in about as month so I must have played my last hand there at the beginning of July and earned my little bit of rakeback. My PKR account has been empty for a while after I withdrew my funds to play elsewhere, but now I had $1.85. So what to do with it? You can't withdraw less that $20 so I figured I may as well play it out.

So I set myself a little challenge. See how much I could make $1.85 grow. The plan was simple, just play Sit and Go's only and maybe throw in some MTT's if/when it got bigger. No cash games. The only exception to this rule would be if I didn't have enough for a buy-in, i.e. it fell below $1.10

So I entered a £1 SnG, leaving just 0.75c in the bankroll. Well fortune smiled on me and I won it. I now had $5.75. I entered 2 more $1 SnG's but didn't cash so the bankroll fell to $3.55. I entered another $1 and cashed in 3rd place. The bankroll now standing at $4.45.

I then decided to try and speed things up and enter a $3 SnG (PKR doesn't do $2 ones for some reason), with the reasoning that I would still have $1.15 left for a last $1 throw at the dice if I lost. But, with relative ease, I won it (you know sometimes that everything goes well, this was one of those times. I hit hands, made successful bluffs and just couldn't seem to lose). So now the bankroll had grown to $16.15. I decided to stick to the $3 level and entered another. I bust out on the bubble when my flush was beaten by a full-house, so the bankroll fell to $12.85.

The last game I have played so far was another $3 and it was quite a mammoth affair with a very long heads-up where I almost lost it a few times. But I managed to survive and eventually turn the chip lead around and win it. Another $12 profit

So at this point, the bankroll stands at $24.55, a whopping 1,327% increase. I intend to stay at the $3 level until I hit $50 and move up to the $5 level. I then plan to move up levels (or drop down levels!) using the 10x buy-in as a guide from then on. So if I drop down to $30 I'll drop back to the $3 level and if I hit $100 I'll move up to the $10 level, and so on.

This is purely a bit of fun. I think I read somewhere that Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson once turned $1 into $20,000 playing online. I don't for one minute expect to reach that mammoth target but it's going to be interesting.

And, in fact, I have actually enjoyed playing PKR again. Who knows, if this goes well I may be back on a more permanent basis. The move from cash games to SnG's has certainly changed my game and I am enjoying more success and profit to be honest. I haven't actually played much poker over the last couple of weeks after deciding to take a small break from it, but now the urge is coming back.

I'll keep you posted how this little project goes

Your right, Jesus is currently trying to turn nothing into $10,000. He's doing pretty well too

Wow, that's cool. That will be the second time he's done it then and goes to show that you don't need a big bankroll to get started and make cash.

I played another 2 $3 STT's tonight (by the way, these are all 10 seater tables I am playing at). I cashed in both, finishing 3rd and 2nd.

The bankroll now stands at $32.95

I'm starting to enjoy PKR again.

Run down:

Played: 9
1st: 3
2nd: 1
3rd: 2
In the money: 66.67%

I think I'll set up an Excel spreadsheet to record these. Currently using old fashioned pen and paper. hehe

Trueform, I'm curious, have you adjusted your game?

lol, very astute of you Nation. Yes I have adjusted my game, big style. One thing I have done is move away from cash tables. The swings were big and it really frustrated me. Since moving to STT's I am enjoying poker a lot more again.

One thing I wanted to do for ages (you may have seen in a post elsewhere) was look into playing Small Ball poker. I love Daniel Negreanu's playing style and he is my favourite player. Information on it though is very thin on the ground. Well I found it finally on YouTube (I think you posted the first video clip here too). I watched all the clips over and over, made notes, and started applying it to my game. It doesn't really work that well with cash games, but I am having a nice run in STT's. I had a good run on Full Tilt with it (though I haven't played there for a couple of weeks, I took a break) and it seems to be working on PKR at the moment.

I used to play mega tight and while this seemed to work to a degree on the cash tables, it failed miserably in STT's and tourneys. Since I changed my style, things are looking rosey.

It's by no means an easy fix though and I have certainly added my own slant on a few points. No one plays exactly the same as anyone else as far as I know. It's no good playing it blind and you still need to know when to make a move and when to fold. However, it does seem to confuse other players because I raise the same amount if I have J-10 suited or A-A. I also bet the flop exactly the same wether I have missed or if I have the nuts. I'm alot more aggressive on the flop than I used to be and this seems to pay off too.

So yes, I have adjusted my game and I am glad I did

And I didn't realise so many people played STT's on PKR. In the 9 games I have played in this little challenge, I have moved up over 1,000 places in the rankings, and that's just from $1 and $3 games. hehe

Sorry I haven't updated much on this but I have had a busy week and haven't had much time to play.

Anyway, the project is still going well and tonight it hit the dizzy heights of $50. So now I am playing at the $5 tables until I drop back to $30 or hit $100. Unfortunately I lost track of wins / losses as I got a bit slack with the record keeping. Also, I threw in a couple of very low limit cash games if I only had 15-30 minutes spare. I think I'm about even on those though.
I also realise that this could potentially go on forever because I never set a specific target.

So I will set a target of $500 or I will quit if I feel it's not moving anywhere for a set period (or I get bored with it. lol)

OK, I called an end to this little bit of fun with the account just under $50. Why? Well I have enjoyed it so much I decided to deposit again and give the $10, maybe some $20 STT's a go on PKR

I only wish they would fill up faster. They take forever!
