Default An ambarassing position

OK - there is a pun in the title. I've been playing for a while now and I've never truly understood one thing (and frankly, never worried much about it - until now) - and it's embarrasingly newbie that I don't know.

When people talk about hand selection and your position - do they mean your position pre or post flop?

i.e. when they say "I'd only play 9c10c mid or late position" do they mean in realtion to the dealer or the blinds? I know it sounds daft - but as far as I'm concerned, you have 2 positions - preflop and post flop.

i.e. if you are the BB - you are in a very late position PRE-flop. you are going to be last to act. But post flop, you are in a very early position.

Not rocket science, but I've wondered when experts talk about our position are they assuming we must adjust this pre and post flop, or do they always, as I suspect, mean in relation to the dealer (i.e. post flop)?

Yep, it's always best to act last after the flop. That's why the button is the prime position.

Whenever anyone talks about position, it's always in relation to the button. I can see your reasoning though. BB is indeed the last to act pre-flop but has terrible position post flop that's why the SB and BB are always classed as bad position

Thanks chaps - that's what I suspected. I have to say though, no poker books explain this and it confused the hell outta me from day one! I was like "ok, I understand I'm in late position now, but after the flop I won't be!?!?" (bear in mind I fully understand the logic of position, I just wondered if they applied a "blanket" rule or it varied from preflop to post flop when analysing starting hands.

I guess you treat preflop as a special category - i.e. you may be badly out of position initially but you must look at the long term picture.
