Default Min raise pre-flop

I seem to see a min raise pre-flop quite often, but what purpose does it serve? The only thing I can think of is to perhaps build the pot, but a lot of the time that doesn't make sense.

For instance, if 3 players limp in the BB wil often min raise. This bet will never push anyone out and in fact players rarely fold to a min raise. And why don't they fold? Well the odds are just too good, especially if you are in late position.

To explain, imagine those 3 players limp for $1 each. The pot is $3, but the BB min raises. The pot rises to $5. So the first caller now has odds of 5-1, the next 6-1 and finally 7-1. Very good odds indeed.

So is this just poor play or ignorance? I certainly don't remember ever folding to a min raise pre-flop if I'm already in the pot

i think alot of the time people will min raise a pot when their holding a decent hand and dont want to scare everyone off.
for example if your sitting in the bb holding say kk and everyone folds round to the sb who only calls then the bb might only make a min raise so as not to scare the sb out of the pot.
obviously this has its drawbacks as anything could come down on the flop making the sb a stronger hand then the bb,but thats the risk people are willing to take by min raising.

Your experience may differ, depending on stakes, but often a min-raise can scare about 2/3rd of the table off - people holding A-rags, low SCs etc - it kinda tells the limpers to bugger off. It's also a good "feeler" bet to see who's serious about their hand. Often a min-raise can make a slow player with Aces or Kings raise over the top as they feel they've found action that will pay them off.

I use a min raise occasionally for exactly the above reasons. I follwo the logic of I'd rather lose a min-raise (i.e. fold if there is a reaction) than follow the turn and river to find I've got a slow-player waiting to clean me out.

build the pot nothing more...mostly germans do it(no discrimination).
I hate this play raise the minimum then bet the minimum on the flop, then when i reraise guys like this they instant call and then bet the minimum again against me on the turn/river and call again to a reraise.
This style pisses me off sometimes because they usually do this when they pick up a draw with a crappy hand and keep building the pot till they hit the 4 outer and then push.

It's ignorance , they need to have the last word.I hate it so much when ur on a slow 10 player table and everybody calls and the BB raises min, and u have to wait again for everyone to call that stupid raise which they will call.To show you that it's ignorance , this happened on a tournament table and i was on the dealer button. The BB raised min while everybody called, it came back to me and i raised min again.Guess what the BB guy pushed insta allin with 3-7 os, all because he needed to have the last word.

its all part of the game so we've just got to get on with it.

Don't rise to it LoserIsYou, he's yanking your chain.

I sometimes do a min raise with AK or AQ off just to mix it up, or even with AA if I feel a big raise would push everyone out and the blinds aren't worth stealing (this is risky though and probably not good play).

I dont see it as ignorance, nor as a good play or bad play. Its just a different tactic, another type of play which can be used as an advantage to a player. Theres many different styles a player plays, loose-aggressive, tight aggressive etc, this is just the same, a different strategie a player uses depending on the situation.

Can get annoying though :P

And because it's allowed to do it's not ignorance, even if there is a law for it i can be so ignorant to still do it.?Believe me more then 9 outta 10 people that have a rag hand in a late position slow table will just check to save time and not raise min to see you still get called by everyone.Strategy my ass, dumbest play out there.
